We are incredibly delighted that the range of portable DACs and headphone amplifiers continues to grow. And now German head-fi specialists Violectric has also entered the field with the exciting Chronos, which offers incredible audio and support for PCM up to 384kHz and DSD256, in an extremely compact design. Violectric has long been a favorite among head-fi enthusiasts and now their signature sound is available in pocketable format.
Violectric Chronos connects to smartphones, tablets, and computers via USB-C, Micro-USB or Lightning, and is compatible with Windows 10, MacOS, iOS and Android operating systems. Despite its small size of only 4.5 x 2.4 x 1 cm, it delivers an incredibly high performance, as we know it from Violectric's larger products, and fully lives up to the manufacturer's slogan: Tools - Not Toys. The amplifier can drive even large headphones, thanks to an output power of 30mW. Violectric Chronos are developed and produced in Konstanz in the state of Baden-Württemberg, where the manufacturer also produces their very large High-end headphone amplifiers and DACs.
It's incredibly easy to get started listening to music on Violectric Chronos. It simply connects to the desired source via one of the three included cables. There is no need to install drivers or other software, and Chronos is automatically recognized as a USB device on iOS, Android, Windows 10, and MacOS. With a power consumption of a maximum of 200 mA, the amplifier has a minimal influence on the power consumption of the connected device. The D/A chipset can handle PCM files up to 384kHz at 32-bit and even decode DSD256. The logo at the top lights up in green for PCM files and blue when decoding DSD. A dynamic range of 130dB and ultra-low distortion ensures a much higher sound quality than what is otherwise possible from a standard output on a smartphone, PC, etc.
As is the tradition at Violectric, Chronos is manufactured in a simple design with a focus on function and performance. It is milled out of one piece of metal with chamfered edges, and the top and bottom are mounted with a glass plate. On one end of Chronos you’ll find a USB-C input and at the other an output for the 3.5mm headphone jack. Two buttons on the side provide easy access to adjust the volume.
