Now the successor has arrived, featuring no fewer than 10 changes and upgrades, making the 99 Classics 2nd Gen an even more attractive purchase.

Balanced sound signature

The second generation follows the same design language and material choices as the original model it replaces. However, much has changed over ten years, both in terms of construction, sound quality, and accessories. While the original 99 Classics was tuned for a sound signature with an emphasized lower register - that is, more bass - this new version is designed to deliver a more balanced sound experience. The bass has been pulled back slightly - though still present, tight, and precise - allowing the midrange and treble to step forward in the soundstage. The sound remains on the warm side, but the overall signature is more balanced and detailed. In the box, you will also find a set of acoustic absorbers that can be inserted into the cups if you prefer a sound closer to the original 99 Classics.

Larger ear cups for reduction of standing waves

The ear cups on the Meze Audio 99 Classics 2nd Gen have grown slightly larger compared to those on the previous version. This has made it possible to reduce both resonance and standing waves within the cups, resulting in more control in the low frequencies and a clearer, better-defined sound. The cup seals have been improved, allowing for the addition of small reflex ports above the input connectors for enhanced bass response. The connectors on the cups, where the cables attach, have also been enlarged - or rather, the cutouts around them have - allowing for compatibility with a wider range of third-party cables. The ear pads have also been redesigned with a new shape and a larger cavity. The mounting system has been simplified as well, making future replacements easier.

High-quality cable and included DAC/amp dongle

One of the most exciting additions to the 99 Classics 2nd Gen is the inclusion of an entirely new cable, which is of much higher quality than its predecessor. It is a braided, Kevlar-reinforced copper cable with a sturdier plug on the amplifier end. This not only improves the audio characteristics but also significantly enhances durability and flexibility. If you wish to upgrade the cable, Meze Audio offers a selection of higher-grade options with various connectors — for example, the Meze Audio Silver Braid with a 4.4mm balanced connector. But the new cable isn’t the only addition in the box. Antonio Meze has also recognized that many users might want to connect the 99 Classics 2nd Gen to a smartphone or tablet. For that purpose, a small USB-C DAC/amplifier dongle is included, allowing you to connect the headphones directly to your smart device or computer.

Focus on build quality and materials

Build quality has always been one of the 99 Classics’ strengths, and the second generation certainly does not fall short in that regard. The headband is made of metal, and all components are constructed from cast zinc. The cups are made from genuine walnut wood, which is slowly air-dried over a period of 45 days to preserve the wood’s natural tones. As this is a 100% natural material, no two cups are identical in grain or markings. All parts of the 99 Classics 2nd Gen are replaceable — from drivers to headband, cups, and ear pads — making it possible to replace any component if necessary.
