Moving Coil Cartridge with built-in step-up
The SPU GTX series is hand-built in Denmark by Ortofon's experienced team of specialists. The housing is molded from a specially selected type of glass-fiber-reinforced polymer, which has not previously been used in the SPU series. The material ensures a stable, rigid construction with low resonance for the meticulously developed motor. The base plate of the housing is also made from the same material to ensure uniform rigidity throughout the design.
The Ortofon SPU GTX S is a so-called Moving Coil (MC) cartridge, which is generally superior compared to the typically less expensive Moving Magnet (MM) type. Normally, an MC cartridge requires the use of a phono preamp with MC amplification, but there's always an exception to the rule. The Ortofon SPU GTX series is equipped with an integrated step-up transformer, which amplifies the signal to a level where the cartridge can function with a standard Moving Magnet phono preamp, such as the input on your integrated amplifier or active speakers.
The SPU GTX models are available in two versions: the GTX S with a spherical stylus and the GTX E, which is the one you're looking at now with an elliptical stylus. The basic construction of the two models is identical, so the choice lies between the two types of stylus shapes.
