To get in front of any confusion, we should mention that Dan Clark Audio, apparently channeling Prince, is the company formerly known as MrSpeakers. They chose to continue the success of the AEON models and retain the name, as well as the design. However, it is also almost the only thing that is not new.
The headphone itself has received a new mechanical design upgrade and can now be folded for secure storage or carrying. The shape of the cups is still the same, ergonomic shape that fits with the contours of the ear. Dan Clark says AEON 2 isn't just a small update to a great product - it is a massive performance upgrade. The planar magnetic drivers are a completely new design, turned 180 degrees, to move the magnet from the outside to the inside, so that it sits closer to the ear. The cup molding is optimized at several points to improve airflow. Improved damping is also introduced, which results in higher resolution, more exceptional dynamics, and more organic frequency response.
Sound-wise, compared to the first AEON, the V2 is a bit on the warmer side with fuller sound in the closed version. A slimmer midrange in the open version and with significantly wider soundstage in both models. You get plenty of low end, no sharp peaks, transparent midrange, and a detailed but balanced top. The new foldable design makes Dan Clark Audio AEON 2 easy to bring along on travels. Although it will typically be a closed headphone that you bring on the train, airplane, the foldable construction is also used on the open version of AEON 2. Simply because, in addition to being smart, it also makes the headphone more comfortable to wear and easier to fit.
