Technics SU-G700M2

Mark II Version of the Premium SU-G700 Amplifier

The Technics SU-G700M2 is an integrated amplifier, but it is built in three separate sections. This design separates the power supply from the power section and the power section from the signal processing. This is the ideal approach as it minimizes noise radiation from the power components into the sensitive signal path. In addition to improving sound quality, this construction also contributes to the rigidity of the chassis.

Changes from the First Version
  • Upgraded LAPC (Speaker Calibration)
  • Upgraded power supply inspired by the SU-R1000
  • Addition of MC (Moving Coil) amplification for cartridges
  • Minor cosmetic changes

Technics has truly thought things through, even the small power-carrying components in the display and digital sections are separated as much as possible thanks to the Optimally Activated Circuit System. One of the most sensitive parts of the amplifier is the small components in the digital section. For example, the clock generator is very affected by radiation, so instead of powering it directly from the power supply, it is battery-powered.

Modern Digital Amplification

The SU-G700M2 is not a classic Class A/B design, as we often see in this size. Instead, Technics has chosen to go the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) route. This offers clear advantages when using modern sources like USB. Where this could cause issues is when connecting analog sources, such as a turntable. This has naturally been considered, and despite it often being where corners are cut, Technics has gone all the way. They have implemented a Texas Instruments Burr-Brown PCM1804 A/D converter. It processes the incoming analog signal in 24-bit 192kHz, so even the broad frequency range of vinyl records is fully covered. In other words, you need not worry about the Class D solution, even if you love vinyl records. The SU-G700M2 utilizes Technics' proprietary JENO Engine, a dedicated circuit to reduce jitter. It is extremely effective and eliminates jitter (digital distortion) across the entire audible range.

Built-In Phono Stage for Vinyl Lovers

Speaking of vinyl records, the Technics SU-G700M2 is also equipped with a built-in RIAA phono preamp for both MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) cartridges. You even get the option for fine-tuning the gain in four steps.

A Great Musical Experience - Also with Headphones

There is nothing better than cranking up a pair of large speakers and getting the full music experience, but sometimes it can be advantageous to use headphones—perhaps to block out external noise or to spare the neighbors. Whatever the reason, you can certainly connect headphones to the Technics SU-G700M2. The built-in headphone amplifier is of the Class AA type and uses separate amplifier circuits for voltage amplification and current amplification of the audio signal. The amplifier is powerful enough to drive almost any headphone with excellent results.

One of the features Technics emphasizes is their LAPC calibration. It is not a room calibration like we see with other brands, where measurements are taken with a microphone. Instead, the amplifier emits a series of test tones through the speaker, measures the phase characteristics, and performs a digital correction of the ideal impulse response. You can choose whether or not to use the function, but our experience is that it significantly enhances the sound. The Technics SU-G700M2 is truly an impressive amplifier, and beyond its excellent performance, you will likely fall in love with its exterior. The triple-braced chassis, the large VU meters, the beautiful aluminum finish, and the weight of just over 13 kg all contribute to an outstanding quality experience.
