Copland CSA 70
Integrated amplifier from Denmark’s Copland
Ole Copland, the developer and visionary behind one of Denmark's many Hi-Fi successes, started his work way back in 1984. Some will say that the design was already retro at the time, but they change their mind when they see them in real life, and admit, that they are almost timelessly retro-nostalgic. A bit like Ole Copland himself. But inside, time has not stood still, and in Copland's smallest amplifier you will find a powerful Class A / B construction, with a wealth of top-shelf components. However, there’s one thing missing, and that is the control tube in the preamplifier section, which is reserved for Copland CSA-100 and CSA-150.
There are many ways to design an amplifier, and often one will set some minimum requirements for distortion, ease of use and similar parameters that are easy to measure and often ensure an above-average result. But the Copland CSA-70, and its siblings, have been created as a sports car; based on visions for performance. There has been a clear idea that one would want an amplifier that was created to be capable of handling one of the most difficult disciplines for an amplifier: the dynamic transient discharges. Therefore, the Copland CSA-70's circuit was created from that idea, and the result is an amplifier that reproduces frequencies between 10 Hz and as much as 200,000 Hz!
A very short signal path has been chosen, which also helps to provide a short feedback path. The volume control is also of high quality, and unlike the digital volume controls, you have no additional circuits in the signal path. To match, Copland itself has developed an excellent MM phono stage as well as a DAC circuit that works really well with the rest of the amplifier.
The sound itself is a bit more to the warm side compared to its bigger siblings, which are very neutral. But it doesn’t lack in soundstage, and you experience every detail in the transients. Additionally, the Copland CSA-70 demonstrates beautiful separation and an extremely realistic and holographic sound image. The airiness and naturalness are, due to the broadband construction, incredible. Voices and instruments are superbly separated and with a clarity so that you can almost taste them.
Copland CSA 70 can be ordered with a Bluetooth aptX HD module
