Technics SL-1200GR2
Direct Drive turntable
With the second generation of the GR series SL-1200, Technics improves on an already magnificent turntable with the addition of ΔΣ Delta Sigma technology.
Technics SL-1200GR2 Highlights:
- Newly developed ΔΣ Delta Sigma motor control
- Direct Drive technology for high precision
- Heavy, anti-vibration construction
- Aluminum tonearm with removable headshell
- 2.5kg braced platter in cast aluminium
The Technics SL-1200GR2 model has been upgraded with a new motor control system that reduces vibrations, ensures higher precision and a better-defined sound image. The technology for the motor control is based on the PWM method, which is also used in Technics' digital PWM amplifiers, where it ensures high precision and low distortion in the amplifier context. Here, however, the technology is used directly in the motor control combined with the newly developed ΔΣ (Delta Sigma) modulation. The combination of the two things, dubbed ΔΣ Delta Sigma Drive, is responsible for the greatly improved performance in the Technics SL-1200GR2 over its predecessor.
Direct Drive turntable
Technics has always been known and recognized for using Direct Drive technology in their turntables, a technology which has several clear advantages compared to belt-driven constructions. Direct Drive ensures a very high precision of the motor, and thus the rotation of the platter, which starts and stops almost instantly after pressing the start/stop button - more precisely, it reaches 33 revolutions from off, in just 0.7 seconds! The brushless DC motor in the Technics SL-1200GR2 is based on the one developed for the top model SL-1200G, but is now even better compared to its predecessor, as it has been upgraded to ΔΣ Delta Sigma Drive for even higher precision and reduced vibration.
Technics SL-1200GR2 is a heavy and stable construction
To reduce the risk of wandering vibrations ending up in the pickup and muddying the sound of your favorite records, Technics designed the SL-1200GR2 as a heavy and stable construction. The entire thing weighs no less than 11.5kg, of which 2.5kg can be attributed to the aluminum cast platter, and stands stable on adjustable, vibration-damping feet. The heavy construction is extremely resistant to vibrations, and i.e., one of the reasons why radio stations and DJs have preferred Technics turntables over time.
High-precision tonearm with removable headshell
The tonearm is another crucial point on a record player, and Technics hasn't cut corners here either. The S-shaped tonearm with aluminum tube is characterized by a low weight and great agility, and is fitted with a removable headshell, which makes changing between different phono cartridges a breeze, and altogether eases the installation of new cartridges. In addition, SME-type /PnP pickups can be mounted directly in the tonearm. The arm has a motion sensitivity of 5mg and is hand-assembled and adjusted by Technics' Japanese experts, for maximum precision.
The Technics SL-1200GR2 does not come with a phono cartridge. When purchasing a cartridge with this turntable, we install and adjust it completely free of charge, so you can start listening to vinyl without having to think too much about the technical side of things. A great record player like this can carry a wide range of cartridges and we have very good experiences with, for example, the Audio-Technica AT33PTG II. You can see the entire range of phono cartridges for record players here, and you are of course welcome to contact us if you need some advice on the right choice of pickup.
