Rega Planar 3 RS
Special Edition of the popular Planar 3 turntable
RS stands for Rega Special, but whether this will develop into a series of upgraded versions of existing products remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the Rega Planar 3 RS is an outstanding purchase, featuring some tangible upgrades compared to the standard version.
Highlights of the Rega Planar 3 RS
- HPL-laminated plinth
- Individually calibrated Neo MK2 PSU
- Nd5 cartridge
- Reference EBLT drive belt
- CNC-machined pulley
Inspired by the 50th Anniversary Edition
The Rega Planar 3 RS is clearly inspired by the now-discontinued Planar 3 50th Anniversary Edition, which flew off our shelves and left many vinyl enthusiasts searching in vain. Fortunately, there is now another chance to own a finely tuned version of the Planar 3—the RS version—offered at a highly attractive price.
HPL laminated plinth
Rega has always focused on lightweight materials for the plinth—the base of the turntable—from the entry-level Planar 1 to the premium Rega Naia. Naturally, the construction varies depending on the model, and this is where one of the key upgrades to the Planar 3 RS lies. The traditional phenolic film coating has been replaced with **HPL (High Pressure Laminate)**, as also seen on the Planar 6 and Planar 10 models. HPL offers greater stiffness compared to the phenolic film—a crucial quality in a turntable of this class. Additionally, it features an attractive brushed steel look with a sleek satin finish.
Belt and Pulley from Higher-End Models
The new lamination isn't the only upgrade on the Rega Planar 3 RS. It also features an upgraded CNC-machined pulley, the same type used on the Rega Planar 6. Mounted on this pulley is the Reference EBLT drive belt, which Rega claims is the best in the world. While that’s hard to confirm, measurements do show a tangible improvement over cheaper belts, including the one that usually comes with the Planar 3. The lid for this version remains functionally identical to the standard Planar 3 lid but is finished in a dark, smoked tint that complements the steel-look plinth beautifully.
Hand-Tuned Neo PSU MK2 Included
The most significant upgrade between the Rega Planar 3 RS and the standard version is the included Neo PSU MK2 power supply. Normally sold separately, this power supply is hand-tuned to match the specific motor in the turntable you purchase—just like with the more expensive Planar 6. When bought separately, the Neo PSU MK2 retails for EUR 360, making the math very interesting. A standard Planar 3 with an Nd5 cartridge costs approx. EUR 1.140, so for just EUR 200 more, you get an individually calibrated Neo PSU MK2, a better drive belt, a CNC-machined pulley, an HPL-laminated plinth and a tinted dust cover.
Precision Rega RB330 Tonearm
One of Mr. Gandy’s passions is the tonearm. Since the needle must move to track the record grooves, it’s vital that this motion occurs with the utmost precision. The new Rega RB330 tonearm is the best Rega offers before stepping up to the much pricier Planar 8. Designed using advanced 3D CAD technology and based on over 40 years of tonearm development experience, the RB330 features: - Intelligent mass redistribution to minimize resonance points. - High stability and nearly friction-free movement thanks to a newly developed bearing. - Precision-crafted brass bearing for the sub-platter spindle, reducing motor strain and improving the accuracy of the 12mm-thick glass platter's rotation. The tonearm’s anti-skating (bias adjustment) has been relocated under the arm and offers three settings adjusted with a slider.
A Turntable with Exceptional Value
The Rega Planar 3 RS is an incredible turntable and the obvious choice for anyone looking to take vinyl playback to the next level, whether you’re upgrading from a budget turntable or starting with one of the best in this price range. Either way, you won’t go wrong with this investment. --
What Else Do You Need?
The turntable comes with a pre-installed and calibrated cartridge. Beyond that, make sure you have a phono stage compatible with MM cartridges. Rega’s own Fono MM is a great choice. For vinyl enthusiasts, cleaning equipment for both records and cartridges is essential, and all necessary accessories are available here.
