Highlights of the Technics SL-40CBT
  • Direct Drive technology
  • Built-in phono stage and Bluetooth
  • Electronic speed control with 33 and 45 rpm
  • Stable construction
  • Stylish, elegant design

The Technics SL-40CBT is the ideal entry point to Technics’ Direct Drive technology in a simple, user-friendly, and elegant package at a good price. The turntable is ready to go out of the box, and thanks to the built-in phono stage, it can be connected directly to an amplifier or active speaker without additional amplification. The Bluetooth connection makes it possible to send audio wirelessly from the turntable to a wireless speaker or a pair of headphones. Technics SL-40CBT comes with an Audio-Technica phono cartridge, so you can start playing vinyl right away.

The SL-40CBT turntable includes many of Technics’ proven solutions and technologies, including the coreless motor, which is the cornerstone of Technics’ Direct Drive technology. Instead of using a rubber belt to rotate the platter, it is driven by a motor directly connected to the platter. This provides high precision in rotation and a start-up speed of just 0.7 seconds from standstill to 33 rpm. The turntable is equipped with an S-shaped, statically balanced tonearm with a detachable headshell. This SME-type mounting makes it possible to use pickups that are either mounted on a headshell or have an integrated SME-type mounting, such as the Ortofon Concorde Music Red or Concorde 5E. The Technics SL-40CBT comes with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95C pickup, which is a fine ‘getting started solution’, but the turntable can easily support a better pickup.

The design of the Technics SL-40CBT is simpler than the other models in the range, created with simplicity and elegance in mind. The 7.1 kg heavy construction is mounted on isolation feet, which effectively decouple the turntable from the surface by absorbing external vibrations from spreading into the turntable. The control panel on top of the turntable provides easy access to start and stop, switching between rotation speeds, and activating the Bluetooth section. There are two options for connection to an amplifier or a set of active speakers with a cable. One output has a built-in phono stage, so it can be connected directly to a line input on an amplifier or speaker with a built-in amplifier. The other is a standard turntable output, which requires an external phono stage to amplify the signal. The advantage of including both options is, of course, that it is possible to use a better phono stage than the built-in one if you want to upgrade the sound at some point.

The SL-40CBT is available in different colors, which also match Technics’ SC-CX700 active/wireless speakers, making it possible to create a complete music system with high quality and attractive design. The turntable also comes with a clear acrylic dust cover. See the specifications for information on additional included accessories.
