Rega Planar 6 RS Edition
Turntable with phono cartridge and external PSU
The Planar 6 has received the RS Edition treatment with Nd9 MM cartridge and RB880 tonearm, and whenever Rega releases a new model, and especially a new special edition, it always deserves our full attention. After the enormous success of the Planar 3 RS Edition, Rega decided that the Planar 6 could use the same treatment – and we are extremely excited! Not only does it look fantastic in the new finish with brushed aluminium on both the top and the sides, it is also optimized to bridge the gap between the Planar 6 and Planar 8 for those who want extra performance in the classic Rega format.
Reinforced Tancast 8 plinth on Planar 6 RS Edition
The Planar 6 RS Edition features a reinforced plinth thanks to the aluminium metal sheets that have been attached to the already incredibly rigid Tancast 8 plinth. Just like the standard Planar 6, the RS naturally uses the double-braced structure that provides extra reinforcement between the critical motor spindle and the arm base. At the same time, you get the phase-matched motor control already known from the Planar 6 and 8, which minimizes vibrations and provides more precise rotational stability due to a more even power supply.
RB880 Tonearm
But the big highlight here is without doubt the RB880 tonearm, which on the Planar 6 RS is fitted with the exclusive ND9 cartridge. The RB880 arm is taken directly from the Planar 8 and represents a significant upgrade from the RB330 arm that the Planar 6 normally shares with the Planar 3. The arm is now even more stable and rigid on the Planar 6 RS thanks to a redesigned vertical bearing, while the distribution of mass in the arm itself ensures fewer points where resonances can occur.
Reference-class Nd9 MM phono cartridge
The ND9 cartridge sits at the end of the tonearm and represents a reference level of precision tracking within MM cartridges. The ND9 uses a Line Contact diamond profile, one of the most sophisticated and balanced stylus shapes on the market, mounted on a cantilever made from fine boron material. Compared to the smaller ND cartridges, the ND9 also features an optimized pole piece for better linearity and channel separation, benefiting the stereo perspective.
Refined Rega performance
The sound naturally leaves nothing to be desired. As is typical for Rega, you get an uncolored, clear and dynamic reproduction of the music that stays true to rhythm, timing and intention in a way that is difficult to find in other designs. Thanks to the ND9 cartridge you get plenty of detail and resolution in the sound, and the RB880 ensures a calm and precise soundstage where the dynamics, from the deepest bass to the finest treble, are delivered cleanly and directly, yet with oceans of musicality.
