Combining the Best of A/V Receivers and Stereo
One of the advantages of an A/V receiver is the ability to manage video sources through the receiver, requiring only a single cable to the TV. It’s rare to see HDMI inputs in a stereo receiver—unfortunately—but with the TX-8470, Onkyo has created an excellent option. However, this stereo receiver is much more than just HDMI!
Comprehensive Streaming Features for Music
The Onkyo TX-8470 offers a wide array of streaming options, ensuring you always have music at your fingertips. Supported online music services include Spotify, Deezer, and Tidal. If you use Apple Music or another service not directly supported, you can play music on your smartphone, tablet, or computer and send the audio to the TX-8470 via AirPlay, Chromecast Audio, or Bluetooth. Additionally, you can enjoy radio stations thanks to built-in FM, DAB+, and Internet Radio functionality.
Onkyo TX-8470 Supports Physical Sources Too
You can also connect physical sources to the Onkyo TX-8470. It features three analog inputs, ideal for devices like a CD player or a tape recorder if you’re riding the retro wave. There’s also an input for a turntable, with support for both MM and MC cartridge types—an uncommon feature in this price range. Digital audio sources are equally welcome, with all incoming signals processed by the highly capable 32-bit/768kHz AKM AK4452 DAC. For example, if you connect a CD player, you can experiment with whether it sounds better through analog or digital connections.
HDMI Inputs with 8K/60, HDR, and More
Last but not least, we must highlight the HDMI inputs—one of the key strengths of the Onkyo TX-8470. These allow you to connect your A/V sources, such as an Apple TV, Chromecast, PlayStation, or Xbox. The inputs support up to 40Gbps bandwidth with ALLM, VRR, QFT, and more, offering up to 8K 60P with HDR10/HDR10+ and Hybrid Log Gamma. The HDMI output supports Audio Return Channel (ARC), enabling you to enjoy TV shows like The Great British Bake Off on your big speakers. A note on the HDMI inputs: the receiver does not decode Dolby and DTS bitstream formats, so connected sources must output PCM audio via HDMI. This doesn’t typically cause issues but is worth noting during initial setup.
Powerful Audio Performance
The Onkyo TX-8470 delivers 2 x 120 watts at 8 Ohms, thanks to a class-G amplifier design. Combined with its custom power supply and low-impedance capacitors, it’s capable of driving a wide range of speakers with ample headroom.
