The decision to leave out the D/A converter and analog stage actually makes a lot of sense, as most people already own a DAC or an amplifier with a USB input. In terms of performance, it also makes a lot of sense, as there’s no need for additional power supplies that might introduce noise to the sensitive digital components.
To deliver the best possible performance, Musical Fidelity has custom designed the digital audio circuitry from scratch. There’s separate power supplies and high-end voltage stabilization components for PCB units. They’ve added advanced re-clocking to reduce jitter on incoming digital signals and even optimized the main CPU with an audiophile grade clock instead of an off-the-shelf PC grade clock.
All digital signals passing through the MX-Stream will be detoxed and cleaned up before being sent to the DAC via the USB output. The result is a near-zero jitter performance, rarely heard at this price point. Out of the box the unit offers 1:1 bit-perfect pass-thru, but also offers a range of advanced options for the tinkerers.
With support for the best streaming services, including TIDAL and Qobuz, a ROON Ready certification, access to online radio stations, DLNA, USB-drive support as well as Bluetooth and Apple AirPlay, this is your all-in-one solution to streaming audio. A wide range of audio file formats are supported, including PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and DSD256.
Musical Fidelity MX-Stream can be controlled using an app or by logging in to its web-based user interface. It’s possible to connect a touchscreen via its HDMI output, to enable easy access and navigation of its settings and options.
