If you value simple, elegant solutions and high-quality sound, a pair of active speakers may be exactly what you’re looking for – and Cambridge Audio L/R M is an excellent choice. The L/R series from Cambridge Audio, which currently consists of three models, is the British hi-fi specialist’s answer to a user-friendly solution for the modern music enthusiast. L/R M is the middle model in the range and offers a wide selection of versatile features, ample power for most needs, and a size and design that fit effortlessly into the modern home.

StreamMagic inside..

The speakers are equipped with Cambridge Audio’s comprehensive streaming platform, StreamMagic, which acts as the hub for a wide range of functions and streaming services. You get access to Spotify, TIDAL, and Qobuz, all in their respective Connect versions, ensuring a stable connection and high sound quality. If you want to play audio from your smart device through the speakers, you can use Apple AirPlay 2 or Google Cast Audio. Bluetooth is also supported, allowing guests to share their music without needing access to your wireless network. If you’ve invested in a Roon-based setup with your music stored locally on a Roon Core, you can also access this library, as the Cambridge Audio L/R M is Roon certified. Streaming services usually require a paid subscription.

L/R M also plays nicely with other components

In addition to the built-in streaming options, it’s also possible to connect external devices to the speakers. One particularly useful feature is the ability to connect the speakers directly to a TV. This is done easily via eARC, requiring only an HDMI cable between the two devices. Once connected, operation is fully integrated, allowing TV sound to play through the speakers while volume is controlled using the TV remote, and the speakers automatically power on and off with the television. A USB-C input allows you to connect a computer and play audio at very high quality, up to DSD512. A second USB input is intended for connecting an external storage device with music, which can be accessed and played through the StreamMagic app. If you own a CD player, it can be connected via analogue RCA inputs or via an optical TosLink connection if you prefer to keep the signal digital all the way to the speaker. Last but certainly not least, you can connect a turntable directly to the L/R M, if it is fitted with an MM-type cartridge. If you’ve taken a closer look at the rear of the speakers, you may have noticed an additional USB-C port – this is used to connect the two speakers, as the M model in the range does not support wireless communication between them.

High-powered 5 driver design

Cambridge Audio L/R M features five drivers in each speaker. On the front, you’ll find a specially developed 28 mm tweeter and a 4-inch mid-bass driver, with another 4-inch driver mounted on the bottom of the cabinet. A pair of 4.75-inch passive bass radiators, one on each side, ensures deep, precise, and controlled bass, enabling a complete and full-bodied sound without the need for an additional subwoofer. If you’re craving even more bass, it is still possible to add a subwoofer. A 64-bit DSP chip and DynamEQ ensure the sound is always perfectly balanced, and you can choose between three EQ settings optimized for the room you’re listening in.

The speakers can be controlled in no fewer than three ways. You can use the StreamMagic app on your smartphone or tablet, the included physical remote control, or access basic functions directly via the control panel on the top of one of the speakers.
